Cool Comic Book Moments #2 (in a series)
Darwyn Cooke* is a name that is bandied about a lot at our store. Chances are if you’ve come in and asked us for suggestions we’ve probably handed you over either his incredibly noir adaptation of Richard Stark’s The Hunter, or we’ve shown you the beauty that is DC: The New Frontier.
He’s an incredibly artist – cartoony, yes – he’s got shades of Alex Toth and Bruce Timm – but he’s got a style that is completely his own.
I’d like to showcase just one page from his entry in the ill-fated DC anthology series Solo.
It’s a ‘cover version’ of the classic Steve Engelehart Batman story “Night of the Hunter”
The basic gist is pretty simple, Batman is stalking a group of bank robbers fresh from their score, and systematically taken them down one by one… Until only one man is left.. read on:
Pretty awesome stuff eh? This story was luckily reprinted in Batman: Ego and Other Tails… worth it’s place in your collection.
*Oh, just so you know, if you’re interested you can read an interview that I did with Mr. Cooke during his appearance at ArtOriginals’ Noir and Beyond Art Show.
